DeepSeek on OpenRouter

The provider page at openrouter.ai/deepseek is a menu. Your bill follows the slug, not the word DeepSeek.

Updated 2026-09-27

OpenRouter groups DeepSeek models on one provider page. In September 2026 that menu included the V4 Pro GA release (0813), an earlier V4 Pro (0423), V4 Flash revisions, and older chat and reasoning slugs that still had live endpoints.

  • Need the current flagship: deepseek/deepseek-v4-pro-0813. Watch the output price.
  • Need a cheaper long answer: deepseek/deepseek-v4-pro (0423) was $0.696 per million output, versus $3.50 on 0813.
  • Need a low input price: V4 Flash 0731 at $0.021 per million input.
  • Stuck on an old id: V3 0324, V3.1 Terminus, and R1 0528 still resolved, with their own provider rows.

Aliases that begin with a tilde, such as a “latest” Flash alias, follow whatever OpenRouter currently points them at. Pin a dated slug if a job must stay on one price.

How the call looks

{
  "model": "deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash-0731",
  "messages": [{ "role": "user", "content": "Review this diff." }]
}

Send that body to https://openrouter.ai/api/v1/chat/completions with a Bearer key. The same key works for every other slug on the account.

Questions

Which DeepSeek model should I put in the model field?

Use deepseek/deepseek-v4-pro-0813 for the GA Pro card, deepseek/deepseek-v4-pro for the 0423 price, or a Flash slug when you want the lower input rate.

Is OpenRouter DeepSeek the same as api.deepseek.com?

The weights can be the same generation, but the host, rate limit, and outage are the provider OpenRouter selected. Your contract is with OpenRouter credits.

Can I force a provider?

Yes. The provider object accepts an order list and a zdr flag. See the ZDR guide if the prompt cannot be stored.
