OpenRouter’s roleplay collection is a filter. The right model is the one that still fits the transcript and stays inside the budget.

Character apps such as Chub, Janitor, and Isekai Zero call whatever slug you give them. “Best roleplay AI” is therefore a model id plus a window, not a separate OpenRouter product.

A practical split

  • Short scenes, 8K context: gryphe/mythomax-l2-13b at $0.08 / $0.11 per million tokens. The card itself says roleplay.
  • A long thread: a 128K or 1M model, or the scene forgets the start. Qwen3 32B is $0.08 / $0.28 with 131K. DeepSeek V4 Flash is the cheap million-token option.
  • A $0 trial: openrouter/free, knowing the model changes.
  • Dolphin 3.0 R1 had no endpoint on 27 Sep 2026, so it cannot be the default until a provider returns.

Price the output. Roleplay answers are long. A model that is cheap on input and expensive on output will dominate the bill. DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813’s $3.50 output rate is a different budget from the 0423 slug at $0.696.
